Lead poisoning in small children has become more widespread. As a parent, you should educate yourself in the causes, symptoms and treatments of overexposure to this dangerous mineral.

This type of poisoning is caused by a child’s exposure to products that contain lead, which is a heavy metal that is found in the earth’s surface. Overexposure to this metal can cause vomiting, stomach pain, headaches, anemia, seizures, muscle weakness, and hair loss. Anatomically speaking, lead poisoning can affect the brain, bone marrow, and the kidneys.

A lowered level of lead in the body can also cause complications in children. These youngsters may suffer a drop in their IQ, have problems concentrating and learning, and exhibit behavioral disorders.

More than 4% of all American children are suffering from lead poisoning and the leading product that can cause it is old paint that is found in older homes and buildings. Toddlers and small children can be infected by putting lead-based paint chips in their mouth or inhaling dust particles that have specks of paint in them.

Other products that may contain unhealthy levels of lead include food or juice stored in foreign cans or improperly fired ceramic containers. This mineral can also be found in water that travels through old fashioned lead pipes which were also used in older buildings.

There are certain precautions that you can take to protect your children from lead poisoning. You should try to keep your child away from any peeling paint, particularly if you live in a building that was constructed before 1978. You should scrape any of these areas and seal them with new paint, which is all lead-free. You should also make sure that all waste is cleaned up if you are in the process of renovating an older home. If your neighbors are doing any remodeling, your children should wipe their feet and wash their hands any time that they have been in contact with the work area.

If you do live in an older home, you should make an appointment with your doctor to have your child checked for lead poisoning, even if you have not noticed any paint chips or other products present that may contain the metal. Many states offer free lead screenings through their health departments and some school systems require this testing to be done before your child can enroll in school.

For children who do test positive for lead poisoning, most of these youngsters require no treatment. The doctor will give you some guidelines to help you find the source of the lead so that you can remove it. Within a few months, the doctor will check your child’s levels again, and in most cases, the levels will return to normal on their own. In a few of the most serious cases, the doctor may have to prescribe your child medication to bring the most serious lead levels down to normal.

If you have several children who have all tested positive for lead poisoning, the doctor will contact your local health department, who will send specialists to visit your home and remove any lead-based products that are present.

Lead poisoning is a serious condition, but with early detection and proper actions on your part as a parent, it is easy to control.

Wishing you could spend all your days relaxing by the beach? If your best vacations are spent with the smell of salt water and the sound of the surf then it only makes sense to bring a little of that feel to your home. Of course, you can do this in any room of your house. Popular furniture options like Cape Cod inspired cedar chairs, rockers and chairs can be incorporated inside and out. The benefits of doing this on your porch or lawn is that you still get to enjoy whatever view you have.

Some great items to incorporate in any beach themed space include seashells, driftwood, sea glass, light houses and wooden furniture. A beach house is usually very light and airy, with a minimal of furniture, but a few well chosen bits of the nautical brought in.

Depending on the size, view, and options available in your outdoor space, you’ll want to ask yourself these questions:

- Is the outdoor space screened in or open to the elements?

- Is there room for large pieces of furniture?

- Will the furniture be protected from the elements or does it need to be weather proof?

- Will smaller design elements be sturdy enough to withstand the weather?

- Do you have a cottage, surf, nautical or beach house theme in mind?

If your space is completely exposed (no screen or roof) then you will want furniture that is designed to stand up to water and weather. Plastic, wicker and wooden furniture are all options. If you choose wicker furniture you’ll want to get weather proof cushions that you can remove and store when the weather gets too windy.

Adirondack chairs that are created for beachfront properties are ideal. They are a comfortable shape and often come with an ottoman. These don’t require extra cushions.

Hammocks are always a great addition. Just be sure you get something can be easily stored in poor weather. Your least expensive option is some cheap plastic chairs. You won’t get as much of a “beachy” feel, and they probably won’t last as long as some of the sturdier options.

If your porch is screened in, you truly have a lot of options. A few simple wooden folding chairs, some nautical elements like buoys, sand dollars, even lobster traps in selected spots can create the theme you’re looking for. Boat rope makes excellent border trim for walls and book shelves.

No matter which route you take, the key is to choose a few pieces of furniture where you and some friends can relax as if you where next to the coastline. Your decision to accent with natural elements or beach themed accessories is what will personalize the space and make it your own. Even if your view is of the mountains, a wooded forest, or your neighbor’s backyard, creating a beach themed outdoor space can offer an instant escape only steps from your front door.

Shop adirondack chairs and outdoor patio chairs and Premiere Adirondack Chairs. Find the perfect chaise lounge to go poolside, or just an adirondack chair for the beach.

Being a new mother is the greatest time of any women’s life and whilst very few would seek to change their situation, it can be very stressful. Nothing beats holding your child in your arms and seeing their cute little smile but when the baby is up half the night crying and screaming the moment can seem very far from great. A lot of the problems a child suffers from are through not getting enough food and many breastfeeding mothers may have concerns about whether their child is getting enough milk. Breastfeeding problems and doubts are natural for any new mother to have but they should realize that virtually every other mother has suffered from the same concerns.

It should always be remembered that breastfeeding is not a new thing and there is a huge amount of experience and information available for a new mother to find. Times have moved on and all the advice may not be relevant but hearing the different stories and seeing how other mothers have found solutions to breastfeeding problems can be a source of great comfort to a helpless mother. Seeing that others in a similar position have made it through is a great boost to any woman worried about what their baby may be going through.

Gaining self confidence is the first step for many women to get through when it comes to breastfeeding their baby. There is no doubt that it is a very stressful time but constantly worrying and fretting is not good for the mum or the baby and should be stopped as early as possible. Having breastfeeding problems is not uncommon and there are hardly any mothers who sail through the new things they have to endure with a new baby so, there is no need to panic. Knowing where to turn to for helpful and reliable advice is the first port of call for many mothers and having this experience to rely upon can make breastfeeding a lot more enjoyable for mother and baby.

There is a thought that many women should have the maternal instinct that should kick in as soon as their child is born but what is the harm in finding help along the way? In any other walk of life, if a genuine expert offered advice that they had learned from over 15 years in a particular field, everyone would listen so, breastfeeding should not be any different. There are a vast number of breastfeeding problems that affect women, some are common and some are not. However by sharing information and passing advice between each other, it can be easier for many mums to improve their situation and make their home life a happier one.

http://www.letsbreastfeed.com, is a fantastic resource of information and advice about breastfeeding that can give any new mother a head start in providing the best milk for their child. A well fed baby will be a happy baby and if they get more sleep and are more active throughout the day, the mother will feel the benefits almost immediately.

Cupolas are making a comeback—not only for barns, but for homes, garages, commercial buildings, and gazebos. Although they are ornamental, cupolas are also very functional by circulating air and providing an inexpensive light source. Cupolas provide excellent attic ventilation by providing a natural flow of warm, moist air in an upward movement through louvered or window sides of the cupola.

Cupolas bring back a bit of country to your estate by providing building ornamentation with traditional early American architecture. Installed on rooftops, they create an asymmetrical appeal that allows the outside buildings to look there absolute best.

A cupola is defined as a dome-shaped ornamental structure that sits on top of a larger building. Cupolas are called belvedere when it can be reached by an inside stairway. Lanterns, when they have windows that illuminate the areas below. Like a skylight.

Cupolas meet aesthetic and functional needs. Most owners today use them as decorative. They just screw them in on the rooftop and top them off with a weathervane or finial. Weathervanes give your cupola a personalized and finished look.

The shapes of cupolas can be round, square or octagonal. Common materials include wood, vinyl, stone and metal.

Wood is the preferred material, as it looks natural and is weather resistant; furthermore, it can be painted to match your d

Weathercock, weathercock, up in the sky, What can you see from your perch so high?

To farmers or to anyone working outside, the weather has always been a very important element. It taught our forefathers to sense impending storms, to hunt from down wind, and to make fires safely.

Before the days of “weather reports” the weather vane was more important then the clock is to workers today. Weather vanes and the wind was a true indicator of weather patterns. Because of this weathervanes became indispensable to the pioneers.

The first weathervanes were made of wood, with an arrow or pointing hand that had north-south directions indicated on them. The wood would rot, so the pioneers got creative and covered the wood with copper sheeting to give the weathervane a longer life. This made the weathervane too heavy, and it did not swing properly.

By definition, a weathervane is a figure that turns freely on a vertical rod and always points into the wind. Weathervane is derived from the word “fane,” which means flag or banner in Anglo-Saxon.

The Greeks erected the first recorded weathervane about 48BC. It honored the Greek god Triton, as they believed the winds had divine powers. It had 8 sides that were carved representing the winds. Even then, they knew wind was a true indicator of weather patterns.

In the ninth century a pope supposedly decreed that every church have a cock on its steeple, a reminder of when Peter denied Christ three times; a reminder that each person would deny Jesus in some way.

The Quakers and Puritans thought weathercocks were graven images, so it wasn’t until the eighteenth century that weathervanes became popular in the United States. At this time many churches adopted either rooster or swallow-tailed vanes.

In 1742, the most famous weathervane in the United States was made in Boston. Shaped like a grasshopper, complete with glass eyes. Just think, if that grasshopper could speak—what a historian it would be. It has survived earthquakes, fires, and the Boston Massacre.

Thomas Jefferson with his creative spirit attached the weathervane on Monticello to a pointer in the ceiling of the room directly below. While sitting inside he could till the direction of the wind.

“The Dove of Peace,” a dove weathervane, was commissioned by George Washington for his estate at Mount Vernon. He commissioned the weathervane commemorating the end of the Revolutionary War.

Weathervane usually feature the interest of the owner; from chicken, horses, pigs, and other livestock for farmers, to deer or water foul for the hunter to sporting scenes or figures of a humorous nature. Weathervanes show off ones personality.

Weathervanes are both plain and fancy, some highly artistic and some humorous, or just an arrow pointing into the wind.

Weathervanes are making a come back, the fanciful designs that reflect the personality of the owners. Placed on top cupolas, weathervanes are giving homes a look to make them stand out from the crowd. http://prairierosecountry.com

Cupolas bring a bit of country to your estate by providing exterior building ornamentation with traditional early American architectural accents. Cupolas decorate exterior roof tops of houses, garages, commercial buildings, and gazebos.Distinguish your home and business. http://prairierosecountry.com

Most likely, the largest investment Orlando residents will make in an entire lifetime is that of a house. Preventing damage to that house is an important factor in maintaining its value. Water damage is one of the things that can cause the most problems to a home. Water damage occurs in a variety of ways. Although of us may routinely check our roof tops for evidence of intruding water problems, there are some places we do not think of at all until it is maybe time to paint.

These places are our doors and windows. Besides the roof and outer walls of our house, our doors and windows are exposed to many elements all the time. Our windows and doors are beaten by rain, sleet, hail, wind and snow. Water leaks can occur from caulking which is old and disintegrates from any spaces that are open around the doors and windows.

Water damage to doors that are used frequently probably will not go unnoticed for very long. This might not be the case with infrequently used doors and windows that are not opened very often. Sometimes, in Orlando water damage can occur slowly over time and escape our notice. It is important to add windows and doors to your routine checklist. Make sure you take the time to go through your checklist on a regular schedule.

If you find a window or door that is water damaged your actions depends a lot on how the damage has already occurred. When doors are exposed to excessive moisture or dripping water, it can cause a wood door and the surrounding doorjambs to swell. This will eventually cause the door to stick and not open and close properly. Water can be dripping down the outside wall and getting on the door in bad weather. You will need to locate the source of the water and repair whatever is necessary to stop it. Water can cause rust on metal doors and frames over long periods of time. A little prevention by an Orlando homeowner or professional is a lot easier than letting the problem go and having to replace an entire door and door jamb.

Windows exposed to water can end up with the same results as doors. Wooden windows can also warp and swell so that they are hard or impossible to open. Leaking gutters can sometimes be the culprit that exposes your windows and doors to excessive water. It is important to keep your gutters in good working order to prevent this and other forms of water damage.

With wooden windows, damage can happen pretty quickly. They can swell shut and not open at all. Caulking that is old can shrink away, turn loose from the building and window or door and allow water in. Keeping windows and doors caulked with weatherproof caulking can prevent water from getting in around the installation areas. Metal windows also need to be caulked to prevent rust from starting around the edges. It is known that many older homes in Orlando have wood windows with the more recent ones being made of metal. It may take longer to damage a metal door or window but it can damage the woodwork around them quickly. Take care of these issues as soon as you find them and you will save your house from unwanted water damage.

Children in today’s society seem to be much more pampered and less responsible than they were a few decades ago. They also seemed to have lost much of the value system that most of us took for granted growing up. By examining the roles of children in the past, we may be able to trace the source of the problems that we are having with today’s troubled youth.

In olden days, children were treated as small adults and given many of the same responsibilities that were shouldered by their parents. Youngsters worked side by side with their parents in the fields as soon as they could walk. Children serving as soldiers were not uncommon in some countries. Marriages took place when a person was approximately twelve years of age in the hopes that they could reproduce in the few years that they had to live. Young people in these times were exposed to the harsh realities of life virtually from birth.

Death was also an every day event when the average life span was approximately forty years of age. Only one in five children survived to adulthood, so the loss of siblings was a common occurrence as well. Many parents did not live to see their children grow up due to the loss of life in battle and childbed, and many children were raised by adults that had little or no blood connection to them.

All of these factors prohibited most children from being pampered or spoiled. The daily struggle to survive curtailed any frivolity. This is not to say that these parents did not value or care about their children. Any child that survived infancy was considered to be a great asset and human nature dictated that these children may have been cherished dearly.

Discipline was also much more vigorous than it is today. Due to the dangers that were present in the settings of old, disobeying a parent’s rule could commonly lead to death. As a way to protect these youngsters, many parents physically beat them to ensure that the rules were obeyed.

In the modern world, daily survival is not the struggle it once was. Parents have become more lenient and loving than their predecessors would have dreamed of being. Every child enjoys playing with toys and receiving a quality education. Many experts stress that parents should allow their children to thoroughly enjoy their childhood as a vital step to them becoming healthy and happy adults.

Due to this attitude of child rearing, several problems have developed. Some young people today seem to have no respect for anything, and many are ending up in jail before their eighteenth birthday. Drug and alcohol abuse is running rampant. As adults, many of these children find that they are unable to cope with “real” life.

As a parent, there are several ways that you can help your child to grow into a successful adult. The main thing to remember is that every child needs rules, and penalties should be handed out if these guidelines are not obeyed. This does not mean that you should physically punish your child by any means. You can decide on an appropriate punishment, but punishment should be given. If you establish a set of rules and do not follow through with them, you could be sending your child the message that rules are not important.

You may also want to give your child some responsibilities around the house. This is a good way to teach your child many of the housekeeping skills that they will need as adults. Teaching your child to respect themselves and others as well as good manners is key to their continued social success.

As a parent, it is your job as well as your privilege to teach your child everything that they will need to know as they grow. Having a good parenting plan can prevent your child from ending up in situations that both you and he will regret later.

We’ve all heard the phrases “Money doesn’t grow on trees” and “A penny saved is a penny earned”. You may have even uttered these phrases to your own children. It’s hard to get children to understand the concept of money. They probably think that if you need money you just go to a machine, insert a card and out pops money. Children have to learn that money is earned, saved, and not an endless commodity.

Be a Good Role Model

Another good phrase to live by is “Practice what you preach”. In order to teach children the value of money, you have to be a good role model yourself. Show your children the importance of money by avoiding frivolous spending habits, budgeting your money and practicing comparison-shopping.

As a parent, it is common to give in to children and give them just about anything they want. This behavior can be very destructive because it denies your child from appreciating things that cannot be bought and being motivated to work hard to achieve goals. It is important to learn to say no and be firm.

Teaching Good Spending Habits

The same financial concepts you use in your life can be taught to your children. Setting up an allowance system for chores can teach them the concept of earning money. The general rule for weekly allowances is $1 per year of age.

You can take this a step farther by having them budget their allowance. Encourage them to set aside a specified amount each month for savings either by opening a savings account for them or a good old-fashioned piggy bank. Give them a notebook to keep track of what they earn, save and spend. It is also important to teach children the concept of giving by having them set aside a portion of their allowance to go to your church, or another charitable organization.

Teach them the value of comparison-shopping by taking them grocery shopping with you. The simple concept of having them help you look for the best deals on cereal, cheese or apples can teach them the importance of getting the most for your money.

For very young children it is good idea to allow them to go to the store with a set amount of money to spend. If they want something it has to be within their budgeted amount. Allow them to pay for their own purchases as well. Help them count out how much money is needed and the change they receive in return. This will help them understand the idea of how much certain things cost as well as teach them how to count money.

Praise Your Kids

It is very important for parents to praise children when they practice good spending habits. Just as adults do, most children will eventually learn from experience when they have made poor purchasing decisions. Be careful not to dictate or command purchasing decisions for your children but instead encourage good choices.

Teaching children and young teens to be financially responsible now will translate into a financially stable adult.

Some parents think that they don’t have to bother talking to their children about drugs and alcohol until they are teenagers. Wrong. National studies show that the average age when a child first tries alcohol is 11; for marijuana, it’s 12. What a scary thought. Therefore the earlier you open up a dialogue with your child about drugs and alcohol, the better.

Talking to Toddlers About Drugs

As soon as your child is able to understand you, you should talk to them about drugs. Of course, you need to tailor the talk to their level of understanding. Start by talking with them about the drugs in your medicine cabinet. It is important that they understand that they should never take medicine unless mommy, daddy or another trusted adult gives it to them. Let them know that if they take too much medicine it can make them very sick.

Talking to School Age Children

As your child gets older and enters school they are going to be exposed to different children and even older children. So it’s important to broach the subject again more in depth before someone else “educates” your child about drugs. The information they may receive from other students can put them at risk of all kinds a problems.

• At this time you can start being more specific about different types of drugs and how they negatively affect the body.

• Don’t forget to add alcohol and tobacco into the mix. Most children have witnessed someone around them drinking alcohol or smoking by this age. Make sure you are honest about what effects alcohol and tobacco can have on the body as well.

• If you are having trouble explaining things to your child then look for books and videos on drugs that tailored for young children. Be sure and talk to your child about the book or video afterward.

• Make sure your child understands that if someone offers them drugs, alcohol or cigarettes, they should say no and tell you about it. You can even do some role playing with your child to reinforce this concept.

Important Things to Remember

• Let your child know that they can ask you any questions they have about drugs and alcohol.

• Take advantage of those moments in everyday life to talk about drugs with your child. Some moments might be when issues about drugs and alcohol come up on television, in a magazine or in your own family.

• As a parent you should educate yourself about the different types of illicit drugs, what forms they come in and what they look like. It is important that children know this information as well in case they ever encounter someone with drugs.

• Be sure and model good behavior. Children are more likely to drink, smoke or use drugs if their parents do.

• Hopefully by starting early and keeping the lines of communication open about drugs with your child will help when you reach those difficult teenage years.

Feng Shui, pronounced “Fung Shway”, is an ancient Chinese practice that allows any space to have good energy flow. Having a good energy or Chi flow is essential to keeping the area peaceful and in good order. Many people use Feng Shui in their everyday lives no matter where they are, whether at home, at the office or in the car.

Feng Shui can help the Chi, good energy, flow to keep out negative energies and make the environment healthier for those who dwell or work within it. To obtain a more peaceful and harmonious life, you need to follow certain Feng Shui tips.

One of the best places to apply Feng Shui is at the office. Doing this can help increase the enjoyment and productivity of those working within. However, it is very important to use Feng Shui in the home as well. Here are some great tips to help you begin using Feng Shui in your home or office today!

Feng Shui Tip #1

First of all you need to clean up the clutter. Get rid of anything that does not need to be in the area, make sure nothing is broken, if it is, throw it out or fix it. Clutter can make you stress out and even depress you. If you have things piled up on your dresser, table or desk you will want to clear them away to make yourself feel more at ease when you are in this space. Things piled around a mile high will stop the Chi from flowing the way it should, cleaning the mess will allow the Chi to flow and use its magic in your everyday life.

Feng Shui Tip #2

For an office, you will want your desk in position called the command position, which means that it needs to be in full view of the door but not in the direct line. If you find it impossible to have full view of the door from the desk you will need a mirror.

At home, the bed should also be in a command position in the bedroom which is pretty much the same as the desk, in full view of the door but not in the door’s direct line. However, if you cannot fully see the door from the bed you cannot use a mirror as you would in the office, mirrors create bad Feng Shui in the bedroom.

Feng Shui Tip #3

Place specific objects in certain spots to create positive energy in every aspect of your life. Certain colors apply to specific elements and each element has control over important aspects in your life. By placing objects and colors that correspond with the element of spots around your home and office you will help the Chi flow better and add to the growing harmony. There are five elements that apply to Feng Shui, Earth, Water, Fire, Wood and Metal. Each of the elements has colors and areas that they correspond with.

Above are three important feng shui tips to keep in mind when you are creating peace, harmony and good Chi flow in your home or office by using Feng Shui. Having peace at home and at the office can lead to a much more pleasurable life. The great thing about Feng Shui is you do not have to be a believer for it to work in your life. Just try simple things in your home or office and you will see and feel the difference.
